Milwaukee edges Syracuse 1-0|
MILWAUKEE, WI -- Johnny Torres’ goal in the 36th minute proved to be the game-winner as Milwaukee Wave United defeated the Syracuse Salty Dogs 1-0 Sunday night (6/6) in front of 1,046 fans at Uihlein Soccer Park.
The win, Milwaukee’s first of the season, raised Wave United’s record to 1-4-1 (4 points) while Syracuse, which suffered its third straight shutout loss, dropped to 3-3-2 (11 points). The Wave United conquest also evened the all-time series between the clubs at one-game-apiece as the two teams met for the first and only time this season.
Torres’ goal, his second of the season, came off an assist from Nino Marcantonio. Marcantonio started the play along the left sideline when he recovered his initial pass for Greg Howes that was cleared away by a sliding Bennito Kemble. Marcantonio then touched it to the right for Torres, who dribbled into the penalty area before ripping a shot from 15 yards out that beat Salty Dogs goalkeeper Byron Foss to the top right corner of the goal.
Syracuse threatened to tie the score on several occasions, the most significant of which was Kupono Low’s blast off the cross bar from the top left part of the penalty area in the 50th minute. Milwaukee also had an apparent goal scored by Todd Dusosky in the 72nd minute waived off due to an offside call.
Wave United ‘keeper Jim Larkin claimed the victory with two saves while Foss suffered the loss despite a fine effort in which he recorded six saves. It was Larkin’s second shutout this season, and the 25th of his seven-year A-League career.
Milwaukee wraps up the current stand when it hosts the Seattle Sounders one week from tonight, Sunday, June 13, 7:05 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park. Sunday’s contest will also be another Family Night at Uihlein, with family ticket vouchers available on www.wb18.net
