Syracuse, Rochester finish 1-1
ROCHESTER, NY -- The Rochester Raging Rhinos and the Syracuse Salty Dogs played to a 1-1 draw in front of 10,527 wet fans at Frontier Field tonight.
After a sluggish start to the game for the Rhinos, the crowd was given the opportunity to get into the game, thanks to a handball in the 38th minute inside the Syracuse penalty area. Rhinos midfielder Pato Aguilera took advantage of the penalty kick opportunity by placing a hard shot to the back of the goal to give Rochester the 1-0 lead.
The Salty Dogs got on the board with a penalty kick of their own. Former Rhino Rene Rivas scored in the 48th minute to tie the score at one.
The Rhinos nearly took the lead in the 83rd minute, as Corey Woolfolk found himself alone on a partial breakaway against Syracuse goalkeeper Byron Foss. Foss, who applied pressure on the Rhinos forward, stopped Woolfolk's attempt with his right leg.
That would be the closest that either team would get to their opponents' goals. The Rhinos outshot the Salty Dogs 10-9 in the contest.
This was the second time these New York State Thruway rivals have met this week. Last Sunday, Syracuse defeated Rochester 2-1 at P & C Stadium. Tonight's match also marks the fourth and final time these teams will meet this season. The season series ends at 1-1-2. The Salty Dogs are currently on a eight-game unbeaten streak, while the Rhinos have only won twice in their last seven matches.
