TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the Teams of the Week for the USL First and Second Divisions for Week 3 Monday, honoring Rochester’s John Ball and Pittsburgh’s David Flavius as the Players of the Week.
On a night in Miami featuring the debut of 1994 Brazilian World Cup champion and star Romario, the Rhinos dominated the action with John Ball scoring twice in leading the visitors to a 3-0 win in their season opener.
Rochester drew first blood in the seventh minute when Ball punched in a loose ball after a long throw-in from rookie Kenney Bertz that may have deflected off first-year Rhino Charles Gbeke. Ball's second goal came in the 49th minute, converting on a right-footed blast from 20 yards out that snuck just under the crossbar.
A veteran USL player, Ball is in his eighth campaign in the USL First Division, his third with the Rhinos.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds picked up four points on the weekend with a win and a draw. Leading the club to a 2-2 tie against their state-rival Harrisburg David Flavius tallied a goal and an assist.
Midfielder Dan Hartung got the season-opening hosts on the board in just the third minute, popping home a David Flavius feed for the early lead. In the 38th minute Flavius grabbed a loose ball in the midfield, blew up the middle, and beat Harrisburg keeper Dave Kern to put the Riverhounds up 2-0.
Flavius has been with the Riverhounds since their inception in 1999 and had recorded 52 regular season goals coming into the season at the USL First and Second Division levels.
The Premier Development League and W-League Teams of the Week will be announced every Wednesday with the PDL Team of the Week making its debut this week and the W-League the following week, May 17.
