Whitecaps win Canterbury Cup
Vancouver downs Portland in penalty kicks

ABBOTSFORD, BC -- The Whitecaps F.C. Men's Team won the Canterbury Cup for the first time in three tries, defeating the Portland Timbers 4-2 on penalty kicks after the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Goalkeeper Mike Franks was the hero in the penalty kicks, stopping two of Portland's four attempts, while Tiarnan King netted the winner as the Whitecaps scored on all four of their kicks.
 
In the consolation match, the Yakima Reds came back from a 2-1 score to defeat the Abbotsford Rangers 3-2 on two late tallies.

Game Notes
-Whitecaps striker Charles Gbeke hit the inside of the post just 2 minutes into the game.
-Both coaches agreed to forgo sudden death overtime in favour of going straight to penalty kicks. -Under USL and international conventions, the game is officially recorded as a tie.
-This is the third Canterbury Cup. The tournament was won by MLS Project-40 in 2001, and the Seattle Sounders in 2002.
-The Yakima Reds defeated the host Abbotsford Rangers in the Third-Place game played earlier. -The Whitecaps Women defeated the Okanagan Predators 10-0 in the preceding preseason game.
